STEM and Empathy in Kindergarten

Prosthetic Arms

Kindergartners approached the sensitive concept of physical disabilities through the lens of two popular children's movie, How to Train Your Dragon and A Dolphin's Tale.  After empathizing with the user, learners participated in a guided build of a functioning 'prosthetic' arm while examining push and pull forces.Children tested different materials in their designs and modified their prototypes until their arm could successfully pick up an object.  This lesson aimed to celebrate each others differences and empathize with one another's challenges.
