Tomie De Paola Publishing

First graders explored the world of publishing and book making during their personal narrative unit focused on Tomie De Paola. After learning about the publishing process and how to create an effective book cover, students looked closely at Tomie De Paola's illustrations and cover art to hone their sensitivity to design. They drew plans, used water color to paint their main art, and then selected a font for their title and by line. Once they had chosen their book binding and assembled their finished work, we celebrated each child's narrative and artwork with sharing and feedback, deepening the sense of first grade community.
